Adam Sandler got robbed IMO. At the very least he deserved a nomination for Best Actor. The film didn't deserve to be in the running for Best Picture or Best Director.. it was good, not great. But Adam Sandler was amazing. And yeah I was surprised by that even though I love him.

Backs the theory that the Oscars are all political?
I thought it was well understood that it was political and driven by marketing budgets. Easy to know who are academy members. Go to their parties. Marketing spends money on this because noms and wins means more people see your film.
