Anybody else do home-brew software rendering to test out ideas? Really nice to completely control the environment when you are trying to evaluate quality.

Admittedly, it's been awhile since I've done it. Done more GPU experiments in recent years.

I also think that having GPU compute opens up the ability to do stuff I would have done on the CPU several years ago, which also reduces the amount of CPU rendering experiments I've done.

For me the main benefit of CPU is that you can inspect/debug *anything* trivially. For toy research projects that is invaluable. GPU is still too complex to debug if you are trying to understand something complex for the first time.

You're not wrong. At home I use D3D11 and the Visual Studio Graphics Debugger allows you to step through and debug a shader. I've found it to be quite usable.
