Pet peeve: "raising the standard" does not mean increasing the quality of work done. It means to make war against someone - it's a "standard" as in a banner or flag - you're waving it as a signal for your forces to attack.

So, when you "hold yourself to a higher standard" - how does that map? From everything I can find "raising the standard" is listed as synonymous with "raising the bar"
