My attitude toward #cplusplus compilers was always "don't trust the compiler". Since being able to see what the compiler does and being surprised by how good it is, my new attitude is "trust, but verify."
Also, just write your code as plainly as possible. If -- and only if -- you find that your code needs to be written less plainly for performance concerns, then write it less plainly.
