This is a page from his book on "vital statistics," and it reads like a badly done Civilization II manual. It contains random factoids, decontextualized, meaningless, and posits it as the key information about civilizations in different times.
This is NOT history. This is word vomit masquerading data. History IS context and interpretation. Crap like this, far from making me rethink my knowledge, makes me question his knowledge of science.
This approach, the Turchin approach, is the equivalent of the fill-in-the-bubble scantrons some of us put up with in school, pretending to be learning. You ever wonder why people are so bad at history? Well, Turchin and the praise he keeps getting are a symptom.
History does not repeat itself. It doesn't have to rhyme. It's jazz, with some refrains in there and a lot of freestyle and a hell of a lot of improvisation and very, very clear influences from others.
And the DISCIPLINE of history is NOT regurgitating dates and names and factoids and making you memorize shit without meaning. That's the opposite of history. History is the study and interpretation of contested data and knowledge and figuring out connections, meanings & causes.
