The choice about whether to have fact-checking enabled, as well as for who is doing the fact-checking, should be up to each consumer/reader. I should get to choose my own fact-checking behavior for the tweets I read.

I think the split is because people have different ideas on who will do the fact checking and what the consequences will be for saying things judged to be incorrect.

If people could choose their checker similar to choosing insurance, & others could look up the truthiness of posts, I don't think many will mind. In this case, lacking fact-checking would be like lacking homeowner's insurance: it looks bad but it's not harmful to others.
