Why would you spend years of your life writing a book, when you can go out and buy one for only a few dollars?

So "find a needle in a haystack" isn't a metaphor for an "impossible" task, it is instead a metaphor for a task that can be done in a single day. You should aspire in your lifetime to accomplish tasks MUCH harder than this.

There should be more short books that you can read in one sitting. They don’t all need to be 200-400 pages.

Nonlinearity of speed: Flying at 2x takes 8x the engine power. Walking at 2x wins you Olympic gold. Talking at 2x makes a dramatic speaker sound like an MIT nerd. Thinking at 2x == ???.

Just discovered a new Twitter category: troll accounts with names similar to famous people that act like jerks to create bad associations. Politics is innovating fast.

Robert MacKay's Chaos Machine. Its configuration space is a genus three surface. The dynamics of the machine are equivalent to geodesic flow on the surface, which is Anosov, hence chaotic.

People who can control the public release of information, do it so that people will commit to an opinion early. "There's a whistleblower". Half of twitter committed right then, to the opinions they already had.

I don't believe "as short as possible" exists. Useful articles of any length (>= 1 sentence) can be written on any topic. Domain experts want a book, some want a page, some want a sentence. Even for the most complex topics, useful one-sentence summaries exist.

A variant of Cunningham’s Law might make a good pedagogical technique. If you want students to remember something they’ve just learned, then say it wrong the next time, and they will all excitedly correct you, thereby imprinting it in their memory.

This, from a pretty harsh review of Gladwell’s new book, is an EXCELLENT lesson on why you should always track down the original source of seemingly-unlikely statistics. Because often secondary sources launder really bad counting. The review is here:
