This week published an investigation into Phillip Garcia’s death. He died in the custody of the Riverside County Sheriff’s dept, which falsified reports about this case. We obtained 17 hours of footage and hundreds documents. I want to tell you how we got that. 1/

As the year ends, I've been feeling incredibly sad. The accumulation of a year of uncertainty, fear and needless death.

People facing federal charges rarely fit Trump’s portrayal of them as members of left-wing radical groups. But prosecutors have pushed in scores of cases to keep protesters behind bars amid the COVID-19 pandemic. W/

Who doesn't remember this haunting image by photographer from the Aug. 4 port explosion? At the center of the photo is a Syrian family whose lives have been completely devastated and torn apart by the blast. Read their story here:

Stopped my morning listening to 's story about a homeless shelter on the UWS. The many voices she captures hold a mirror up our city - the ugliness, the generosity, and the remarkable people surviving here.

Last Halloween, my family saw an NYPD car racing the wrong way down a street *hit a teenager.* The police said it didn't happen. We shouldn't believe what we saw. So I started reporting. What I learned: NYPD impunity is built into the system.

I talked with 's yesterday about our reporting on Phillip Garcia, and about how rare it is to obtain footage and documents about in-custody deaths in jails.

Riverside County reached a settlement with Garcia’s family, paying them almost $1 million. The settlement also prohibited them from talking to the press. You can read our story and watch a short documentary based on these documents and records here:

The new laws in California should provide transparency about what happens to people who die at the hands of police or corrections officers. But in this case, we only know what happened to Garcia because of his family’s lawsuits. 13/

The attorneys attached the expert reports to show dangerous public health conditions in the jails. One references Garcia’s death was “related to rhabdomyolysis related to agitation.” The sheriff’s dept did not provide the expert with its internal investigation of his death. 12/

But the reports came out. In April 2020, the attorneys representing inmates in Riverside jails sued to force the sheriff to release information about the spread of the novel coronavirus in the jail system 11/

As a part of the settlement of the class action suit, the court appointed two independent experts to document the treatment of inmates in the jail. I requested those expert reports. Riverside County again refused to release them. 10/
