The easiest shortcut to building great products is not to think like your best customer but to be your best customer. Stop hypothesizing, and just build what you’d want built for yourself.

The advice still stands. It just means that we need to make sure that everyone gets the opportunity to build a product for their community, to solve their pains. Hence the need for open source (and to sustain that community! Hence http://backyourstack.com )
