If I were interviewing someone I'd have them read a screenful with a bug, talk through what it does, fix it & have a conversation about it.
Stripe does a bug squash - bug report in some medium-sized open source project, need to investigate and maybe fix

I think you can do both, but a lot of my career has involved factoring away new little libraries.
