The TV equivalent would be: each TV station pays some fixed fee, plays whatever they want, and then those fixed fees get distributed to shows based on percentage of time on TV. It is weird how we treat these things differently.

I’d imagine that if someone likes particular episode of a TV show, they might watch it a few times. But for music they’d probably listen to it hundreds. When you have that many more “plays” for a good product that must play into the business model? Just assuming though.
