A true story: a sweet, Kanehsatake Mohawk elder walked over to me at a grad ceremony and said ‘I recognize you.’ Beaming with arrogance, I replied ‘I work for the newspaper.’ She said, ‘No, that’s not it. You’re the guy who plays softball in jean shorts.’ Yep. That me.

Got kicked in the ribs, the head, the arms, the face, the gut (oh dear lord did that not feel good), was punched repeatedly in the nose and when I tried kicking back my shin cracked on a dude’s knee. But I have to say the worst is whipping your cold toes with a skipping rope. 🥊

Got to train with a badass today. Well, we were in the same gym more or less. He knows I exist... probably. Cédric Muller. Google him.

I’m okay though. In case that wasn’t clear. And if I wasn’t okay that’s okay too.

Had the best chat with a friend about anti-depressants we'd taken over the years. Like, it was more just comparing side effects, reliability, doses and he goes: 'Ah yes, trazadone, my old friend' and he nods and looks off into the distance. It was funny. This isn't a sad tweet.

As the Bell Falls dam nears its breaking point, one couple told me they're ignoring evacuation notices. They've been sleeping in shifts, watching the river and have an ATV ready to take them to a camp in the mountains. That and 's reporting:

Montreal's fire chief: Our dikes are stable for now ... but we can't guarantee that they'll hold if the water rises another 30 cm. It could go over, around or through the structures, breaching them and hitting 30, 40, 50 homes at once."

Montreal's fire chief says dikes are holding but under immense pressure. More rain means the risk of major flooding along the city's northwest coastline. Pierrefonds, Ile Bizard and Ahuntsic are at risk. No forced evacuations yet.

Well, looks like Montreal is about to declare a state of emergency. The downpour is pushing sectors like Pierrefonds, Ile Bizard and Ile Mercier to the brink. Stay safe out there.

    3. The magnitude of the flooding problem has only recently come to our attention and there are a lot of tough questions we have to ask ourselves and actions we’ll have to take. The victims of these floods don’t need an “I told you so.”

    2. In Lachute, you’re seeing farmers, machinists, nurses and other solidly lower-middle class folk on the verge of losing it all. Many bought their homes nor expecting the river to swell as much as it did (it hasn’t in decades).

    1. As flooding persists across the Laurentians, I’m hearing a lot of “they shouldn’t have built on flood plains?” In many cases, these aren’t millionaires losing a vacation home.

The dam at Rivière Rouge was built to withstand a maximum of 1,000 m3 of water per second. It’s taking in about 1,300 right now. Hydro-Québec can’t guarantee the structure will hold but if it goes, the effect won’t be felt much outside of Grenville.

SQ has a command centre, boats, ATVs and a bunch of officers in Grenville-sur-le-Rouge, where the La Belle dam might soon fail. It would affect hundreds of homes.

Officials warn that La Belle dam on Rivière Rouge is on the verge of wilting after nearly a week of flooding. We are approaching and worst case scenario here. Baskstong dam and Carrillon are also under tremendous pressure.
