I just finished ten incredibly rewarding months as a Mozilla Fellow working on making open source decentralized social media better for everyone. I've relaunched my Patreon with a focus on, well, fixing social media. You can see what I've been up to here:

Now that your favorite western oligarch has bought a large stake in this platform you might be considering how to get out? hosts a free workshop 14-15 May for groups interested in running alternative social media.

The Lurk folks are running a workshop May 14-15 that will teach what to do once you get a server up & running (either by paying someone as mentioned earlier, or on your own). They are looking for participants who plan to bring over an existing community!

If you're a weirdo (I know a lot of you follow me), maybe give a shot

If you're a new media artist (I know a lot of you follow me), is a pretty big tent and as far as I know a pretty cool server

If you want to join an already-existing Hometown server, I maintain a list of them here. Though it's not as ideal as bringing along your already-existing community, it's a start.

I realize this is not a solution for everyone but it is definitely a solution for SOME subset of people I see on here who are currently despairing and wondering "what should I do next, where should I go?"

You can sign up for their server and they'll have a server up and running for you within about a day. Then you can post "@darius@friend.camp hello I'm here!" and I will follow you back and help you get acquainted with cool fediverse people

Once again gonna promote Spacebear, who will handle the technical side of maintaining Hometown for you (Hometown is my mod of Mastodon that has extra features to enable cohesive small communities) (we're not affiliated, I make no $ from their sales)

“I have to buy and take the public square private in order to save it!” Try saying it out loud. It sounds ridiculous. Hero-complex nonsense. But so are the ideas that 1) we should have a global public square and 2) that there’s no “moderation” in the public squares we do have.

"buy 100% of your favorite social media platform" is ALSO not what I meant when I said

It would be really nice if 's official integration would support full commit messages and not just the short form title. This would encourage devs to write longform commit messages using markdown and make git logs better for everyone.

I noticed Twitter got worse in the last week and then I realized it's been more than 30 days and I need to re-up this muted phrase (I am setting it to "Forever" this time)

it's the 53rd anniversary of the first RFC that would eventually lead to the internet! 👀 I couldn't imagine a world without it now, and I am grateful that it's allowed me to meet all of you. 💜 Thank you to Steve Crocker, and to :

If you're on the fence about bringing your community over to Hometown, there's a workshop being run May 13-14 that will cover what exactly to do *after* you get the software up and running! (aka the hard part)
