i don't understand people who say shit like "WSL is just a ploy to keep developers on windows - they don't really care about linux!" like it's a bad thing
Microsoft has been contributing to kernel development for about a decade now (originally due to their use of Linux in the Azure platform). They're also one of the highest-level sponsors of the Linux foundation. For a while they were a bigger kernel contributor than Canonical

In terms of WSL being good or not for Linux, I was mostly talking about the fact that it will make users less and less likely to choose Linux as a primary OS going forward if they can get the things they want from linux but also be able to run legacy/exclusive windows apps

plus, i can't find the source now, but they've said they're pushing changes they've made to support the full linux kernel shipping with windows later this year upstream
