Cool use of technology at Kayseri’s Museum of the National War of Independence. A virtual magnifier translates text in the old script (which pracrically no one reads nowadays) to text in the Latin script of Modern Turkish. Advice: Add foreign language options.

Losers of the night: Democratic Party (which looks comically incompetent) & Iowa (which is forfeiting the “right” to be the state that goes first). Big winner: Trump (whose party declared him the Republican winner hours ago).

I’ve been focused on this since before 2016 and this is why was my 3rd interview. This is about the potential energy that can be stored in a system. I can’t measure it for you. No one can. But my thinking has been here in the open for months:

The gist of the matter: India is undergoing Pakistanization. Two of the three components of pre-partition India have fallen victim to self-destructive and globally dangerous sectarian violence.

Those who die in the Wuhan epidemic are not just numbers. They are real human beings. Sadly, Professor Lu Caiquan, a scholar of early modern China, died without not even being tested for the and thus won't be counted in the numbers of people who died from that virus.

Three cheers for the Mumbai police. They have instituted a devilishly clever solution to the city’s insane noise pollution. You’ll enjoy the clip ...

70% of young American adults would vote for a socialist. This points to a huge failure in the education provided by my generation, the boomers. In waging our culture wars, we’ve neglected to pass on some fundamental lessons of the 20th century. Timeless wisdom + two eye openers:

Very cool: has put together in one collection its articles on the economics of religion ... and made them freely available (for a limited time)!

The first coronavirus case was noticed on December 1. Instead of taking precautions and sharing information, Xi’s regime disciplined doctors for rumormongering. General lesson: dictatorship is a terrible form of government. via ⁦

Once again, Turkey’s regime blocks an inquiry likely to expose its mismanagement and corruption. This time its about the the Elazig earthquake. Buildings fell and lives were lost because of building permitting and inspection systems biased in favor of regime cronies.

Four decades of theocracy made only less theocentric: “Despite Iran’s pious reputation, Tehran may well be the least religious capital in Middle East... There has been a rampant campaign to build new mosques, yet more people flock to art galleries.”

Many of Turkey’s public universities have become so packed with regime cronies that their inane pronouncements have ceased to shock. The latest from a “professor” at Istanbul’s Yildiz Tech U: “The Elazig Earthquake is punishment for the ban on child marriages.”

Its about "Preference falsification" the theory that people will lie about their true preferences out of social fear, and how regimes based on this are fragile to sudden collapse once a cascade of people speak up
