Can #NATO expel an ally? Seems like this thread from January is relevant again...https://twitter.com/timsayle/status/1084930148019961858 …

    Tim Sayle added,

    Tim Sayle @timsayle
During the drafting of the North Atlantic Treaty, both the Canadians and Americans offered language that would allow the alliance to manage an unfavourable change in government in an allied country. The British and French rejected the idea. The issue was revisited in… 1952. https://twitter.com/shifrinson/status/1084926906892472322 …

Some thoughts on whether, as a matter of law, Turkey could be expelled from NATO - now up on @just_security at https://www.justsecurity.org/66574/can-turkey-be-expelled-from-nato/ …

Really glad @aurelsari weighed in in this important point. His research highlights similar evidence I tweeted about 10 months ago, and I was fascinated by his novel suggestion.

People should remember that NATO commits all members to militarily support any member unconditionally who is attacked - a kind of blank check and moral hazard encouraging reckless behaviour. What if Syrian Kurds attack Turkey at some point? NATO must support Turkey.

'Material breach' is indeed a novel suggestion. Even then, NATO decision-making is based on consensus. The likelihood of unanimous consent to expel Turkey is extremely remote.
