  1. Psst. All this Kumbaya "bipartisan" talk about Covid stimulus isn't really intended to pacify Republicans. It's intended to pacify the Democrats' most unreliable senator, Joe Manchin.

  2. A lot of the coverage of the Covid stimulus's fate in the Senate, I feel, feigns ignorance of how Mister Bill becomes Mister Law. I try to correct that in my latest Backbencher piece, on Biden and partisanship and what I've come to think of as yooniddy.

  3. It’s a bit mystifying why the Republican compromise on Covid stimulus is deemed so newsworthy. Biden is meeting with the Rs as a courtesy. He has the votes to push through his bill already.

Mitt Romney figured this out two decades ago, writes . He and other members of the GOP need to understand why it’s smart for them today.

The Democrats have not yet begun to appreciate what a gift they have in Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Trump gives public vote of support to pro-insurrection Rep who thinks "Jewish lasers" in space are starting wildfires out west. Not only won't be purged from GOP caucus but be a de facto leader. McCarthy will fall in line. GOP increasingly explicit in support for insurrection.

I’m trying very hard to wean this Twitter feed from Trump stories, but I couldn’t resist this trailer for Mrs. Seth Mnuchin’s new film.

The Washington Monthly reprinted my Backbencher piece about Republicans' vulnerability on the minimum wage issue and how they can make it go away forever.

In 2002, Mitt Romney came out in favor of indexing state minimum-wage hikes. As writes, now that Romney has acquired more backbone, he should show it off by reverting to his 2002 position, and get some other Republicans to join him.

Julie K. Brown’s Pulitzer-winning Miami Herald series on Jeffrey Epstein was well-timed but not all that groundbreaking. Now Brown is embroiled in a nasty legal fight that turns largely on who did the investigating.

I don’t mean to be judgmental, but I’m starting to wonder whether Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene might be a little funny in the head.

Remember when Donald Trump, in October, tried to make an issue of Joe Biden saying "I would transition from the oil industry"? Trump couldn't get any traction with that. Here's a big reason why: That transition was already well underway.

If GM says it won't make gas-powered vehicles after 2035, that probably means it will stop making gas-powered vehicles a lot sooner than that. I wonder if anybody will still be making them even five years from now.
