Me: here is an analogy that is meant to be thought provoking. Twitter: OMG! You CAN'T make a comparison between two or more things that are so qualitatively different. Me: Yes, I can. That's literally the definition of an analogy, which presupposes differences and similarities.

Anyone who has friends/family that work as surgeons or other meds knows that they have a *complete* different job and impact. By all respect and self respect, let’s do ourselves a favor and not compare our own utility with such professions. Just take the lawyers as example.

No one will care if your or my own journal article gets rejected, but a few people will care if a heart stops beating. I sometimes feel the

Having a paper rejected is much different than loosing a patient or a case. We can submit the paper to another journal and it still can get published elsewhere. A dead patient however... So a manuscript rejection is not a failure.

poor analogy actually. (1) u can submit to not top journals, i.e. regular and have high success rate. sure if u a gp and gonna try heart surgery, stats would be same. and (2) papers is only 1/3 of every academic life - teaching and service are 2/3.
-
Either you overestimate acceptance rate (even in « regular » journals) or we don’t share the same definition of « high » success rate...

If academics can have their writing rejected 90% of the time and still keep a job, that shows how little importance or value academic writing is. A lawyer or medical doctor would be fired for malpractice if they failed 90% of the time. Valuable work needs to be successful
