I agree with the status problem, but saying the rest of us are succeeding *despite* something and describing other schools as “lower ranked” still reinforces the idea that a non-Ivy education is somehow lacking. Maybe the ranking system is the actual problem?

The fewer resources come in after graduation. Folks getting jobs at places with fewer resources (e.g. TAs/RAs) and higher course loads.

Many years ago I did a leave at a top school in my field. I was fascinated how that school's name on my name badge suddenly made me a lot more interesting at conferences . . .

I had exactly the same experience... not only did people think I was much more interesting but what I said seemed to have more gravitas. I am also convinced my papers were accepted in top tier journals easier.

Academia now (based on what I see) is more about seeking institutional validation rather than producing actual good scholarship. Institutions don't make good scholars, good scholars make good scholars.

I was on active duty when I got my PhD. I didn't apply to a top program, just the one that was closest to where I was stationed (R2). To this day, I'm looked down upon by "some" scholars because of my pedigree, even though I was hired and currently work at an R1. F**k them!
