The US gave a gift to the world in its protection of religious freedom. But that right is under threat at home and abroad. I celebrate America’s rich tapestry of spiritual belief and call on all to stand against those who attack any faith tradition.

Other Jewish cemeteries, and historic African-American cemeteries, have also been vandalized in Richmond.

5 years later, just blocks away, Richmond families established the first Jewish cemetery in Virginia near the corner of 21st and Franklin. It still stands today, sandwiched between downtown housing, evidence of graffiti vandalism obvious at the entrance.

During this week in 1786, the Virginia legislature passed the Statute of Religious Freedom, guaranteeing the right to worship—or not—as you please and preventing government action preferring or punishing you for the choice you make. It became the foundation for the 1st Amendment.
