That is a very outdated view on geologists and Earth Scientists - I know very few who work in the oil and gas industry!

@timeshighered further to my tweet, this view you shared is incorrect and unhelpful. Geology is a diverse subject. You should try to be more positive, sharing incorrect and ill-informed statements will have a negative impact on the science. - Još 1 odgovor

"Earth sciences" encompasses many disciplines, not just geology. I don't think the author realizes that.

This definition is what I (and most geologists I suspect) default to..the NSF definition: https://www.nsf.gov/geo/ear/about.jsp …

Why the implicit assumption that enrollment should be constant? Aren't there actually dimmer job prospects driven by % of geology jobs in oil are gas and performance of that sector? What's the hard data behind a 25% drop not being in tune with reality?
-
I had many problems with this article too. The fact is that many of the alternate sectors it talks about - water, mining, geothermal - really don't need as many geos. as O&G. And it isn't just environmental concerns that drive young talent away.

Vast majority of our earth science grads do not work in oil & gas. Most work in engineering and infrastructure, where good ground investigation and monitoring is critical to project success. It’s the same picture globally. Most ES/geology grads work outside the resource sector.
