What was your first programming language and how do you think it influenced you?
Depending on what counts as programming, mine was Visual Basic. As a kid I also played around with QBASIC, Logo and MUD scripting. Visual Basic remains a reminder that removing barriers to entry works and that tiny applications made for a single purpose are still useful.

Also got me my first job in programming, setting my career trajectory.
More of a meta-language, but when running FORTRAN card deck for engineers I was given JCL (job control language) cards that had to be positioned around the source deck. In time, I grew to understand what they did.
Mine was qbasic, but i was healthily pulled off of that to C++ early on. However C++ and later JS made me completely paranoid about code actually doing what is intended.
That's a fascinating trajectory. We had a C++ textbook at home but I was too intimidated to look past the first few pages. I would have been about 12
qbasic. simple enough to get started, complicated enough to write cool games, and it got me buried deep in my first online community. shared source code, cooperating and interacting with people i'd never seen.. it was a doorway to the good parts of the internet
QBASIC was mostly frustrating for me. I didn't quite know enough to fix problems and didn't have anyone to ask for help. I never got a graphical app working.
