1 - Read up on code you think is cool, build something with it, show that project on your GitHub or LinkedIn 2 - If they don’t hire juniors at some point the only person that knows how to work with x,y,z system will retire and it’ll hurt the company.

Amen to the second point. Hiring juniors is excellent to bring fresh thinking, e.g. they’re curious to ask why things were built that way and provides insurance against key-person risks leaving.

First job: I hate to say it but nepotism and networking are key. Meet ppl at conventions or on linkedin, college job fairs etc. Reach out to recruiters. Hiring junior: think of this as an investment In a future productive Dev. You get a blank slate to train however you want.

Also: orgs that are too senior heavy really have a hard time maintaining their infrastructure. Senior devs have a habit of only wanting to take exciting new work and not boring (important) tasks that keep the wheels greased. Junior devs are much more open to helping out.

Advice for timid companies: the most cost effective way to get senior sw engineers that code using practices you use is to train juniors and help them grow into seniors, then ask them to help train the next group of juniors.

1. Good places are looking for some ability, but mostly can you learn and be coached. Develop a narrative around what interests you, what you’ve been poking at. 2. Do it, you cowards. Juniors are like sponges, give you new perspectives, and seniors can develop mentorship skills.

Advice of people who want their first sw eng job: Make stuff. Make lots of stuff. Find problems you have and solve them, then Open Source the solution. Find Open Source projects you like that are small and in great need of help and start out by doing documentation, then code.

Demonstrate your passion for coding. Actively work on your skills. Juniors can't compete on experience or knowledge but they can be the most motivated and eager to learn. Look for companies that work in a domain with which you have experience or an interest.

Good senior devs are hard to hire, expensive and can be choosy about what they want to do. A good junior developer can pick up easier tasks delivering good value for money now whilst developing into the star performer of tomorrow.

Don’t stop developing when you leave Uni, keep creating things and keep your skills and knowledge fresh. Know why you want to be a developer so you can articulate that. Employers look for grads with a grown mindset who are good communicators and good at problem solving
