If I could spare a theory; the reason to jump to "we'll only delete justly" may likely be because every wave of accusations across fields has always been met with shouts of "but what about the falsely accused?" regardless of if the argument is in good faith or not.
And especially the way nerd spaces can tend to lean... I would hazard a bet that there are people at least THINKING this way, even if it's not spoken.
