Yasser Fathi, a photographer from Gaza who took this photo, was shot in the stomach yesterday by Israeli forces while wearing a PRESS vest. Since the protests began March 30, two journalists – Yaser Murtaja and Ahmed Abu Hussein – have been killed and at least 20 others injured.

Reporting for radio is different than for print. Sound quality matters. Then there are distractions. Here's a transcript of an interview I did with former Trump aide Sam Nunberg/:

I met Junot Diaz only once in my early twenties and was so moved by his encouragement (in regards to writing and journalism) at a book signing that sometimes I still think about what he said. Sad to now think I have zero male author heroes.

A lot of Asians in Asia are indifferent to what Asians in diaspora describe as appropriation because they see parallels with how Western culture gets imported to Asia and assume the appropriation is a sign of their culture’s rising prestige when it’s really anything but.

This is why it’s important to have diversity on your staff. No one else was gonna speak up. And wasn’t going to respect anyone else speaking to him like this. Thank You

In 1931, Zora Neale Hurston sought to publish the story of Cudjo Lewis, the final slave-ship survivor. Instead it languished in a vault. Until now.

The thought of someone — Cathy Yan — being BOTH a front page reporter and now a Hollywood blockbuster filmmaker is so epically cool. Nevertheless the fact that she’s a Chinese American woman, too. Let that all sink in for a moment.

Sometimes it’s too easy to “tidy up” our stories, as if life’s summed up in series of small decisions that make up big ones. A struggle’s being decisive about those small ones, w/o expectations and realizing we often have less control than we think we do.

Haven’t read a personal essay in a while that resonated with me as much as this one, which goes beyond the how-to act of packing lightly and into the territory of cross-cultural identities, privilege, and distance. Some thoughts that I didn’t even know I needed to hear.
