So many innovations were and are still being made during our *current in progress* pandemic for sheer necessity's sake. A hopeful byproduct of the past 12-18 mths was that these virtual pivots and accommodations are far more inclusive and welcoming to new & diverse populations

Charging ahead eyes & ears closed to erase the past year because of a bottom line is a big fuck it and fuck you to your customers. You are choosing revenue over people. Even after a year where you likely reached MORE people than you ever did w/regular by rote in-person cons!

Why can't you bake into your con structural improvements when it's clear they *are* improvements? When it's clear they *do* introduce new people to the hobby? When it's clear it *can* bring you more money in the long run?

Shrugging back to "normal" is so goddamn short-sighted. Yeah maybe you feel you have no choice because you'll lose the farm if you don't cash checks this year. But "normal" is a short-term fix that won't save you long-term

And if you didn't try to innovate or learn anything after this past year, then maybe your same old, same old shouldn't be preserved at all

When you loudly belch out "anything goes" at your con (no masks, no testing or vaccination protocols, not even enforcing basic Covid guidelines)? You have curated & moderated your space to invite and include a very specific, careless, toxic demographic

You're welcoming those that are proudly anti-mask or anti-vaxx. The ones that proudly politicize public health to use as a cudgel against others trying their best to be safe. The ones that proudly have less decency & empathy for others

It tells me you value revenue over the safety of the people that are forking that revenue over to you

It tells me you aren't interested in hosting a safe event in any respect. Not just safe from Covid. But safe from aggression, harassment, bullying, hate speech, etc

And it's disgraceful that you pass that responsibility onto customers just so you can remain derelict in your own responsibility to host safe and ethical events

You can't take a "submitted without comment" attitude with public health and safety, even if you are indemnified against consequences with boilerplate waivers

Gen Con had to make decisions last winter so regardless of where things stand now they were always coming back regardless of attendee safetyhttps://twitter.com/tiffanyleigh/status/1339198867435302913 …

Boggles my mind that the Gen Con braintrust doesn't realize that being pro-public health + allocating money and resources accordingly would make them *more* money now and later. Like, why not invest in current and future new attendees long-term by, say, building trust with them?

Even at your most cynically capitalist: slap the dragon logo on a bunch of masks to sell more merch!pic.twitter.com/qHvBtAqdxN

(Picturing a sweaty Gen Con organizer in dire straits while ducking legbreaking loan sharks as if it's Uncut Gems, Indiana)

It's clear that Gen Con didn't spend the year trying to make their con better by incorporating any innovations. They spent it crossing their fingers in ride or die mode
