Amazon Alexa secretly recorded private conversations and sent the recordings to random contacts - all without notifying users. 😱 https://www.fox13memphis.com/news/trending-now/amazon-alexa-recorded-private-conversation-sent-it-to-random-contact-woman-says/755720160 … ht @sapna

Amazon rep: “This was an extremely rare occurrence.“ So we’ll just take your word for it then? This is why we need transparency and accountability on privacy. Esp for tech cos like Amazon that are omnipresent in consumer lives AND also supply tech/services to gov/military/LE.

Many large tech companies (inc. Amazon, Google, Facebook, Microsoft) sell tech/services to gov, military, law enforcement, and political campaigns. There are NO guarantees that the data collected from consumer devices will not be used for those buyers.https://www.wired.com/story/the-line-between-big-tech-and-defense-work/ …

Reminder that there is no privacy policy for the Amazon Echo or any Amazon Alexa devices. The TOS only refers to the http://Amazon.com  privacy policy, which does not include details on recording, voice data security, etc. https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201809740 …

Threat modeling saves me again. We've thought of this and that's why we don't have any of these types of devices anywhere in our house.

This incident may be some of the worst possible anti-Alexa advertising if it becomes more widely known.

I'm sorry but if people are installing technology like this in their homes just for the novelty of it, they are idiots

This is without a doubt a distressing situation/article—but it doesn’t help to pluralize the single instance it describes.

Technically there is no reason whatsoever this would be extremely rare. It should be impossible. Also. This proves it is possible and happens outside of operational expectations (and design?)
