My process while coding is one that nobody else needs to see. There is a lot of cursing, talking to myself, frowning, Googling, trying out stuff that obviously won’t work but I just wanna be sure, etc. I can’t necessarily talk you through that AND have something that works.

Plus, I’m usually listening to music while I’m coding, so I am in basically no state of mind to talk about why I did something the way I did (and have no practice at doing it). Coding interviews are trash.

Not to mention my basically complete reliance on developer docs and having tons of tabs open. Been working with Ruby and Rails since 2005-2006 (yes, before Rails was even at 1.0) and STILL need to look up stuff. I just can’t be bothered to remember method arguments and whatever.

Code I’ve written has raised approaching $1MM and I still absolutely need Stack Overflow. Keep your coding interviews. They ain’t it.

@bryanl I can't even type my name when folks are watching me do it.

Hey
@tiffani I'm going to stop you right there when you say "the last real job I had". This is defensive and self-effacing. Your work, right now, is very real and very important. And you're absolutely doing it. Keep going. -
You’re right! I’ll stop this.

Once you ask me to do a take home test I am like thank you but no. My abilities and references speak for themselves.

Yeah, if you e ever written a typo on a whiteboard it should be obvious. And code has more context; it is not something that you’ve doing since first grade. I would not ever subject to anyone to that, I want to know thought process more than the characters.

had a hiring manager once cluck his tongue when whiteboarding a for loop so of course i changed the order of conditions to be wrong. got the job, but with a snarky "practice your loops before next monday," after the handshake. whiteboarding is torture.
