    Looks like a brand new cover, but inside I bet it's the same brilliant book I first read 50 years ago.

    Latest acquisition. Not sure how I’ve lasted so long without this one my bookshelves…

    At tonight's local history society meeting their will be a talk on Spas in Essex. The meeting starts at 8.00 in St John's Church Hall, Victoria Avenue, Grays, RM16 2LP. Visitors are very welcome at all meetings - £2.00 per meeting.

    So that’s it. The Adult Community College is gone - and with it 120 years of history. No Historic Building records were made, no attempt to preserve any of the heritage of the building. must be very proud.

    His mistress (well, one of them) was Martha Penistone, niece and step daughter in law of Chadwell's Sir Alexander Temple.

    A few TLHS members appeared in the funeral scene as extras - or in one case, her feet did.

    The ANSWER to last Friday’s ‘Where in Essex’ is the iconic St Clement's Church in West Thurrock. . Next to the Procter & Gamble factory overlooking the River Thames, the church was one of the locations for the film 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'. More:-

    I wonder if there is a story about which parishes were in which jurisdiction.

    Their Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction is the Commissary of Essex and Herts whilst the surrounding parishes is the Archdeaconry of Essex.

    If you're having trouble with the 1921 census, beware indexing errors - mine include Lancashire for Lincolnshire and Louth, Ireland for Louth, Lincolnshire.

    There is a family story that my grandmother met him on one of the tours, but I've never been able to confirm it.

    A closer view of Johnson's portrait of Sir Alexander Temple - thanks to Viscount Cobham for permission to photograph and use this image. The gorget and the sash are military symbolism. The portrait was probably commissioned to celebrate his appointment as captain of Tilbury Fort.

    This was painted while Sir Alexander Temple lived at Chadwell Place.

    A portrait of Sir Alexander Temple (1583-1629) by Cornelius Johnson perches above a book case in Hagley Hall, home of Viscount Cobham. It was seen by the Georgian tourist, John Loveday, in 1765, when it was beside the chimney in the dressing room.
