Can’t fathom why Facebook’s Dublin HQ uses this address rather than the name of the street it’s actually on

Tenth of December by George Saunders. Short stories, dark and hilarious. I loved how he invents a completely unique writing style for each. Faves: "The Semplica Girl Diaries” and "My Chivalric Fiasco"

Twilight of the Gods: A Journey to the End of Classic Rock by Steven Hyden. Wait, I have to do the guilty pleasures too? I am possibly the ideal reader for this book.

Farsighted by Steven Johnson. I’ve yet to dislike a book by him. Effectively makes the case for decision-making to be studied as a real discipline, but we’ll probably just keep YOLOing everything.

Born Standing Up by Steve Martin. I’m not a particularly huge fan, it’s just good to read randomly sometimes. Shows the decades of hard graft needed to become an overnight success.

I’m going to do this too. For this reason but also because Goodreads is the pits. Will backfill with January reads now.

Suspect the SF surge may be self-reinforcing. Past elections, a vote for SF was basically a protest vote. Die-hards only need apply. Now even those with long memories have the option to hold their nose and vote in the first female, left-leaning, non-FF/FG Taoiseach ever

Tore through Uncanny Valley by . So good. I lived in SF during the same period and this book both captured my misgivings and made me feel seen. Best writing about the Bay Area zeitgeist since Joan Didion? Slouching Towards Burnout! Excerpt:

Hey Dublin! Fun event planned for next month. We pick one recent project, and talk about the gory details from the perspectives of three members of the team that shipped it: a Designer, an Engineer, and a PM. RSVP here:

We all want to help address the climate crisis. But it’s such a complex issue that it can be hard to distinguish between data-backed improvements and feel-good distractions. So here's your data-backed guide:

What a clever way to explain time to kids. The concept of “next week” is hard to describe to a 3 year old! From the brill and charming Irish language book Foclóiropedia.

For a more expansive definition of film editing I recommend "In the Blink of an Eye" by the brilliant Walter Murch:

Which, for all it’s technical virtuosity is the main failing of the film. 1917 might as well have DIRECTED BY ME, SAM MENDES watermarked across the screen for the entire duration

The *actual* cuts in 1917 are not great: it's pretty obvious where the transitions between takes are hidden. You end up playing spot-the-cut. Given that film editing traditionally avoids drawing attention to itself, it's ironic that these "hidden" cuts have the opposite effect.

1917 subsumes film editing (assemblage) into cinematography (specification). No chance to fix mistakes in the edit.

They took the visual language used to create a scene in traditional editing (establishing shot, middle shot, over-the-shoulder, close up, etc.) but instead of assembling those moments in the editing room they had to "pre-edit” them into one continuous shot. Very difficult!
