I’m not even interested in talking shit about incels or breaking out my “days since a male mass murderer” meme anymore. This guy was clearly unwell, and the Internet is awash in predatory men seeking to weaponize the anger and frustration of young men to prosecute their wars.

Guys like this and his ilk are the only real example of “toxic masculinity”.

No, they're the most extreme examples. Not the only ones. Think about it - do you really believe these people jump from puberty to "let's kill women who won't shag us"? No. They're radicalised, step by step, just like Islamists. Nazis didn't start out building gas chambers...

It starts out with "being a virgin is bad", "not a real man if you're not getting lots of pussy". Then the idea that rejection is just "playing hard to get" (plus the actual pain of rejection, and cognitive dissonance to avoid facing that!).

Moving up to "sluts don't deserve respect, let you do what you want". And that real men make strong moves, don't take no for an answer. Add jealousy from not getting any when other guys all (say they) are. And so on. All this is toxic masculinity, incels the logical conclusion.

Fucking excuses....stop defending their actions by blaming toxic masculinity. It’s not logical to do what he did or to be an “Incel”....you guys are ridiculous lol

It's not logical to do a lot of things, but people do them, and are reinforced in doing them by other illogical people, and by cultures that make them feel like there aren't any good options and that they're broken. Ignoring all that seems insane to me.

Growing up, not displaying traditional masculine traits was really difficult for me. I felt the need to try to act more "manly" than I was. It was very alienating and exhausting. But by the time I was about 14 I learned to accept my masculinity on my terms...

and have had a healthy relationship with myself and others ever since. Without the need to constantly alter my behavior around other men. Hearing the term Toxic Masculinity for the first time helped me tremendously in understanding what I was feeling and that it was a real thing.

People are different. I don’t like cars, or know how to use tools. I like Shakespeare and poetry. I’ll drink a banana daiquiri and eat kale. I love football and MMA. The point is be yourself and don’t worry about what people think.

That's what I'm trying to help men learn, and part of that is helping them to learn that it is okay to like the things they like and not have to pretend to like the things they don't like. Sounds like you were either taught that properly or learned it on your own, congrats.

I can’t say why. I also help kids and young men be ok with who they are. I encourage them to be individuals and don’t worry about any group that people try and put you in.

Great! Sounds like you're also doing the important work of teaching them an alternative to toxic masculinity. So maybe don't come at me like I'm a crazy person for trying to do the same, kay?

I’ve never mentioned that term to young people. It doesn’t help. Giving people an excuse for bad behaviour is what I’m trying to avoid. I’m not coming “at” you. We just disagree about the utility of that term.

Nobody is defending their actions. Explaining the causal factors that lead to an action isn't excusing it. Explanation is not excuse.
