On the flip side, if you WANT to work 50+ hours a week, that's cool too. But it should be a personal desire, not an external requirement. And always ALWAYS take care of your personal health first.

Absolutely!!!!!!! One of the "best" parts of the PhD is the """""freedom""""" we reportedly enjoy. (and by freedom I don't mean freedom to choose which 27 hours in the day you work
)

That idea is canceled. My mentor told me that lab productivity isn’t measure by hrs & results but by perseverance, literature consumption and abilities to understand the rationale of the experiments. You can spend 100 hrs in lab and be bad at all the above
-
I really, really wana tag this mentor right now because they are the MVP. If you're reading this - here's your crown

That’s pretty widely accepted as the standard, unfortunately
-
It's not MY standard
Fun fact: I used to work like that. Then I got diagnosed with a rare brain condition. I work more acceptable and manageable hours now and (spoiler alert) I'M MORE PRODUCTIVE.

I think I work between 45-50. I try to be very productive while at work/school and not waste any time. If I work excessively one week I try and take extra breaks the next. My mentor is very supportive of balance.
-
I’m only getting about 20-25 hours in the lab because classes and teaching are so time consuming
it makes it difficult to plan experiments

The number of hours that some people say we should work is crazy. One says he works 100 hours a week (and everyone on his team does too). His health is poor. That is not who I want to be, nor should it be an expectation.

Any scientist would know, actually any human, that hours is no way to calculate productivity. The bottom line is, just work, people - postgraduate studies are hard for a reason. Put away the social media, stop "multitasking", write down small goals, FOCUS, and move forward.

ANYONE WHO TELLS YOU THAT YOU HAVE TO WORK 50+ HOURS A WEEK TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN YOUR PHD IS LYING.
Run far, far, far away from ANYONE who tells you that.
(and if it's a PI, bring all their students with you - they need to be rescued. Not all heroes wear capes)
