This also links up to one of my other controversial views, which is that universities probably shouldn’t hire people unless they are fully competent to evaluate them internally without outside letters.https://twitter.com/thosjleeper/status/1088901816526557189?s=21 …

I won't be able to get back to everyone. Closing thoughts: I said "manager". Managers should coach and that coaching should be paid by your employer, not something you have to seek elsewhere out-of-pocket. 1/2

Most negative replies were about loss of autonomy. Very few replies about how managers could hold (bad) colleagues accountable, improve performance of department (thus reducing one's own workload), or use delegating (not dictating) management styles. 2/2

I’m attracted to “people who are paid to help them develop into successful researchers and teachers” and completely repulsed my managers. The difference between the two is important.
-
I don’t think there’s a difference frankly.

A colleague of mine said we could use editors. Not to edit our work. To assign us tasks and get on our case if we don’t deliver.

This seems like a combo of (1) those fancy faculty success bootcamp programs where you pay $3-4k for a few months of coaching and (2) a highly skilled administrative assistant. In which case: if you're giving me that for free I'd sign on in an instant.
-
I’ve never heard of the former. That sounds like a pretty bad personal investment and instead like something your institution should just provide.

Exactly why this is occurring to me. I went into academia thinking I didn’t want to be managed but turns out managers can be a really useful sounding board and help you navigate your job better.
