The problem with science isn't p-values, the problem with science is us.

Obviously Circus Pizza was superior to Mr C. Entertainment Cheese’s establishment, though.

This is a good definition: Yet it also reveals something: that “identification strategies” tend to involve a sleight of hand by which the definition of an unidentified thing is changed to a different but identified one.

Hivemind: what’s the best concise definition of causal identification that you’ve seen? (Preferably with references)

It says a lot about human psychology that airlines can continue to successfully market what is effectively ‘unusually high individual contribution to global carbon emissions’ as a desirable status symbol, including to people apparently concerned about climate change.

Not going to say who rejected me for PhD admissions but will share that during one of my admit weekends, I got to see guest talks by two people who were faculty at other schools I was admitted to. And they were good talks. Don't schedule good outside talks during admit weekend.

Today I moved forward the publication dates of several papers on my CV from 2019 to 2020 because they haven’t actually been published “in print” yet, despite being online already and despite me doing the research for them several years ago.

This bears repeating: PhDs who end up working outside the academy (for whatever reason) are not failures. The academy has no monopoly on great and important work. There are great success to be had in other sectors. Enough already with the professional elitism.

This is why you need social scientists to get involved before you try to build products that make claims about about human psychology from a narrow class of human behavior. Construct validity is actually a thing and you can't just pretend it's not a thing.

I’m collaborating with some people who use a pandas+matplotlib workflow. I am struggling because matplotlib is unintelligible to me. What are the best resources for getting up speed with it?

Had a chat last time I was in the US with some extended family about my commute to work. They asked how the drive was. I couldn't figure out a way to articulate how it was impossible to drive to - let alone park at - my current office and you would have to a lunatic to try.

The sports+parking contrast between American and European universities is so striking. When I moved to LSE, I remember fondly reading the page on the school's website that simply said, in effect, "There is no parking anywhere near LSE. Do not drive to LSE."

The post is all about consequences for whimsical things like reading fiction and experiencing imagination and all I can think is “how do you even maintain you impostor syndrome if you’re not constantly telling yourself how inadequate you are?”

If your theory requires actors to know why they do things (i.e., know their preferences and understand how to act on them under particular institutions), people should be able to just straight up tell you whether they act consistent with your theory or not.

Hot take of the day: political economy is a subfield perfectly suited to qualitative rather than quantitative research. This despite most political economists doing mostly the opposite & endless tension been formal theorists and qualitative scholars over both theory and method.
