This is a rare Nazareth iris (I. bismarckiana) growing on a rocky ledge in the northern Galilee. No cultivated iris can compare with its intricate beauty.

Three stages of my latest illustration: first primed, then with the first layer of oils, and finally completed. The last layer of paint takes an order of magnitude longer (and more patience!) than the others.

Back in the studio and I've just completed an illustration of Cistanche violacea, inspired by my encounter with the plant in the Middle Eastern deserts last spring.

Trekked across the north of the island today among groves of succulents (Aonium lancerottense), interspersed with golden splashes of Asteriscus intermedius - and here and there, little white alliums (A. canariense).

More shots of Cistanche phelypaea, the spectacular yellow parasitic plant that can be seen jutting out of the sand from many metres away.

Whole shrubs engulfed by hungry yellow dodder stems - a leafless 'vampire' that steals its food from other plants; seen today on the island of La Graciosa. – mjesto: La Graciosa

Took a boat to the island of La Graciosa today, to examine the coastal dune flora. Breathtakingly beautiful. – mjesto: La Graciosa

Such a thrill to see Helichrysum monogynum growing in the wild: an exceptionally rare endemic of Lanzarote with ruby-red flowerheads that gleam beneath the Canarian sun.

Sow thistles are regarded as weeds in many places. Not so out here in the Canary Islands where they produce wood trunks and even form forests (this one is Sonchus pinnatifidus). But cut the leaves and you'll still see the familiar milky sap.

'Fox tail agaves' (A. attenuata), native to Mexico, are planted widely in arid climates. In winter they send forth these spectacular blooms that droop with their own weight.

Today I clambered over amber and black hillsides studded with white starry asphodels.

Taking an evening stroll around a dormant volcano and I have just happened across a glade of 'brown bluebells' (Dipcadi serotinum).

After a gruelling clamber up these rocky cliffs we eventually came across what we were looking for today: the shrub plantain, Plantago famarae. It may not look like much but this endangered species is very special indeed, and seen more often by goats than by people.

At the foot of the cliff we found Periploca laevigata, replete with exquisite purple starry flowers.

There's nothing more exhilarating than clambering down a sheer cliff in pursuit of a plant! This one is an exceptionally rare curry plant (Helichrysum gossypinum) that grows only on these rocky crags, and is worth getting sweaty palms for...

Today, local botanist Alfredo and I scaled the highest cliffs of Lanzarote to see some of the rarest plants that live only on these remote rocky shelves.
