Happy St. Patrick's Day on Sunday, March 17. In 1876, MLB's first year, there were six Irish-born players. Andy Leonard, Fergy Malone, Jimmy Hallinan, Tommy Bond, John McGuinness, and John Curran. Bond (left) lived longest, until 1941. Andy Leonard may have been best.pic.twitter.com/XZjecYMVkR

First hit in MLB history was by native-born Irishman Jim O'Rourke, a single in the first inning of the first game, on April 22, 1876.pic.twitter.com/1CMAWU1hII

Does the term Major League Baseball go back to 1876? Or does it go back to the National Association? 1876 is the first year of the National League. Great trivia questions is what happened first, Battle of the Little Bighorn or 1st game of the NL?

I’ve wondered this myself. When was the first year that the actual name Major League Baseball was used?

Meaning no disrespect but can you help me understand how Leonard was better than Tommy Bond? To my uneducated eye Bond looks to have been an excellent pitcher for many years.
