Putting on my security hat, I'm not necessarily interested in causality. For critical applications, we need: * testability * reproducibility * resilience against "bad" (uncommon/malicious) inputs * maintainability (i.e. able to patch errors without introducing others). 1/2

At work, I use since I work for , but never felt an urge to get off FreeBSD at home. I also got really interested in FreeBSD as a firewall/NAT appliance and am making it my new focus on src contributions.

IC career ladder Junior: accidentally breaking the rules Mid-level: intentionally breaking the rules Senior: knowing when (not) to break the rules Fellow: Rules? Where we're going we don't... Just kidding, here are the rules. I wrote 'em knowing we'll (have to) break 'em.

And here’s a wonderful post by OpenSMTPD’s main developer : Very interesting insight on how a bug enters the code and becomes exploitable over time.

99 smartphones are transported in a handcart to generate virtual traffic jam in Google Maps. Through this activity, it is possible to turn a green street red which has an impact in the physical world by navigating cars on another route!

I took my 8-year-old to the office on Take Your Child to Work Day. As we were walking around, she starting crying & getting very cranky, so I asked her what was wrong. As my coworkers gathered round, she sobbed, 'Daddy, where are all the clowns that you said you worked with?' 🤣

I... Look, I enjoy spending money for goods and services. When you pull crap like this I want to go back to physical books. This is disgusting, Amazon. You don't need this level of data to delight customers.

What issues do people have with a rollout in an enterprise? Log volume? I’ve seen orgs worried about 20GB of daily Sysmon log data, while at the same time spending a 6 figure sum on a license to process 500GB of daily firewall log data. (which is mostly useless)

Young hackers probably never popped a shell on Irix, AIX or SunOS just for the lulz, either. Sadly, we're all mercenaries now (young & olders).

We have over a Petabyte of data stored on ZFS at work, and over the last 10 years we’ve lost zero bytes of customer data despite all sorts of exceptional hardware and software failures. The idea of putting it on btrfs is beyond laughable...

"Former California grid director says the state's power system is ready to take on any hacks from Iran" Sounds like a challenge. Do you want to be hacked? Because this is how you get hacked 🤷‍♂️

1998: The article "Smurfing Cripples ISPs" was published. Of those who've entered the cybersecurity field since June 1, 2017, only 4% can give a layman description of a Smurf attack. More alarmingly, only 2% of that population can name a single Smurf. 🤔

I have no CVEs. Not a valued member of the infosec community. No CFPs submitted. I don't go to cons. I don't know anyone I follow on here personally. I don't do any infosec stuff outside of work. Infosec is a job for me, has been for the last 20 plus yrs & I'm happy with that.
