    Moscow has not only been asking for things it cannot get, but in a way they know will ensure they cannot attain them. Serious negotiations are done behind closed doors. Something is very wrong with this picture, the pol side appears to be a smokescreen.

    I'm very dubious we really know very much about whether major powers are rising or declining, let alone how the key decision makers in other countries think about it in real time.

    We live nearby. Every couple of months our four year old asks why the bells are ringing— 500k, 600k, 700k, and now 800k— and we try to explain.

    The announces it will toll its mourning bell 800 times -- once for every 1,000 dead from COVID in the US -- today starting at 5 pm ET.

    Putin is an ideologue. He is highly and emotionally motivated by ideas, not just material or "security" interests. Analysts of Putin/Russia make a big mistake when they leave this factor out, including when explaining today's current crisis.

    Agree. Person of the year means the most consequential actor in a given year. By that metric, v odd that Time has never given it to Xi Jinping. By comparison, Deng Xiaoping got it twice. Means little of course except as an proxy for how Americans look at the world.

    Elon Musk as Time's demonstrates American myopia quite perfectly. Meanwhile, Xi Jinping solidified for the rest of his life he'll rule China as it overtakes US leadership in many areas, forcing tectonic shifts to the world order.
