  1. (Checks Ello, finds that it's still a stylish but desolate wasteland, goes back to shouting from a street corner in Ballard.)

  2. Man, I already quit Facebook on principle this week. Can we finally all just go back to blogging and RSS?

This, now, is a glimpse of the future of journalism we're building: unexplained takedowns by faceless, spineless internet giants. Enjoy.

  4. Women constantly and virulently harassed: eh, no bigs. But heaven forbid the NFL see a GIF they don't like.

  5. The contrast in Twitter's response to harassment vs. funny NFL GIFs is my new go-to example for "follow the money."

Imagine if there was a framework for taking down harassing/threatening content as effectively as a sports GIF.

  7. It is old, but I will always love this guide to eating in Argentina for tourists:

  8. So Gremlins is on Amazon Prime now, in case you feel like watching the second best Christmas movie ever made.

  9. Let's just be honest: Fox Mulder is kind of a dick a lot of the time, and I don't see why Scully puts up with it.

  12. Pixar's next movie is built (partly) on USGS topo data. Public science benefits us in strange ways sometimes.

  13. Let's be clear: a web that's 50% AMP (for static article pages) and 50% crazy mindblowing interactives is probably a healthier web.

  14. AMP isn't coming for news apps and interactives. It's coming for the article pages your IT department writes. Because generally, they suck.

  15. I've got quibbles with the format. I love JavaScript. But the kinds of stuff I do can't go into our CMS anyway, so it's not my problem.

  16. Page speed, infinite flexibility, happy advertising department: pick two. But don't tell me custom elements constitutes "forking HTML."

  17. Saying AMP is "forking HTML" seems silly when the point of Instant Articles & Apple News is literally to build a privately-controlled Web.

  18. We're going to have a hell of a time subsisting on the good will of the tech industry if we insist on remaining passive about our fate.

  19. How frustrating is it that stuff like AMP comes from outside the news industry? Why is it that we have to wait for other peoples' solutions?
