For the small proportion of the population whose gut can’t absorb vitamins, this might be useful but is already available on the NHS. For everyone else, few people are actually vitamin-deficient these days and for those who are, dietary improvements are better than iv drips.

You have a gut precisely for the absorption of nutrients and water. Resorting to using your veins for very short term hydration (most of it will be passed out as urine by the kidneys very soon after the bag finishes anyway) is unnecessary and pointless.

Most people need to eat more fruit and vegetables anyway. The health benefits of doing that go beyond vitamins alone. You can’t get IV fibre infusions, for example. And as for hydration... this is all just pseudoscientific “wellness” profiteering. Just drink! Eat more healthily!

I guess people spend their money on pointless things all the time. Endless “stuff” to fill our homes. This is pretty harmless, for most people, and presumably has safety built in for reputational/business/professional reasons. It just seems.. exploitative of people’s ignorance.

So I have noticed that they get one thing right, which is that their different bags of fluids are *very* well differentiated visually, with clear logos (related to the fluid's name, too), to reduce substitution errors. Maybe the NHS's suppliers have something to learn from them!pic.twitter.com/NWhHEvfFCY

A colleague at Glastonbury sent me this pic. I’ve worked (non-clinically) in a field hospital at a festival and I know how difficult it is to keep things clean. I expect they’re working hard to ensure no infections at the cannula sites for these non-essential interventions.pic.twitter.com/zFWSuQ92ed
