So, which mic should I go for to not sound completely awful whenever I'm in voice? Do I go for a normal headset with mic or a separate mic?

Depends in your budget. I always recommend the one I have, which is a Rode NT1A with pop filter, PSA1 holder and a usb interface.

I'd second that. Also running thru a mixer with EQ and Compression would make this setup broadcast quality essentially.

So that's another vote for Rode @insQC . Go watch a VOD of Maya's to hear the NT-USB, nvc also used to use this mic, and it was better imo out of the box than the uber expensive one he has now.
