This is the sharpest movie of the Sun ever made. Even at this fine resolution, the scale is enormous; each plasma cell here is about the size of Texas. via

So, a story I've been working on... The FCC may have wrongly ignored US environmental law in approving SpaceX's Starlink mega constellation (and other satellites). Were it to be sued, it would likely lose. Story below , and thread to follow (1/)

It's intriguing to me that, throughout this discussion of the military and war, all these candidates keep talking about safety, not about peace.

Remember in Little Women when the girls give their Xmas breakfast to a poor family & then they get home & their table is replenished & Amy asks "was it fairies?" That's apparently how the Academy thinks one of the best movies of the year got made too.

I also won a mug in a raffle, don't think I've ever won a raffle before. So overall has been pretty excellent.

The world is terrifying and academia is stressful but this week I had an extended conversation about coffee with a terrace house cast member in Honolulu and I can now die happy.

I noted yesterday that plenary speaker Ann Boesgaard was the first woman to observe as a PI at the Mt Wilson 100-inch. Similarly, Vera Rubin was the first woman to observe as a PI at the Palomar 200-inch. Now one of the world's best telescopes will be named after her.
