You're thinking short term. This is a message to other countries to quit charging tariffs on our exports. Why should they get to charge that but we don't? No one should. So once everyone gets the message, we can remove the tariffs again. Try thinking a few steps ahead. Not one.

Seems you’re the one thinking short term. Mercantilism is antiquated, all this will lead to is an economic pissing contest that the consumers of these countries will take the brunt of.
