I'll eat it because I rarely will turn down pizza but it's not my favorite. My wife however will get pineapple every time. But it's certainly not a "proper" topping, and I suppose that's where the meme comes from.

Ok! Whoa whoa whoa!!! The whole point behind the crust and tomato sauce is a launching device for the oowie goowie melting awesomeness of the cheese. Otherwise, it’s just dipping bread in marinara sauce. That’s called and appetizer at many Italian restaurants.
