      1. Minimal hardware/setup cost: small vendors like this breakfast stand don’t need to buy a POS system. These QR code placards allow buyers to scan, enter amount and pay. Imagine Venmo with QR code.pic.twitter.com/4rYHuJTaPk

      2. Ease of use: more advanced sellers like this juice bar have scanners like the one below. To pay, your QR code is scanned and that’s it! Everything is immediate! No 2-5second delays like with credit card scanners. No signature. No paper receipts and no paper jams!pic.twitter.com/3gmh1xRZE4

      4. No chargebacks for sellers!! Unlike credit cards, WeChat and AliPay take on the chargeback risk! And processing fee is lower. Mobile payment is a more secure payment method since it’s tied to your bank account. Each transaction requires your fingerprint or password.pic.twitter.com/XN8aWJNJgN

As a result, more and more sellers only accept mobile payment. Since mobile payment requires a local bank account and local phone number, it’s becoming harder for foreigners traveling in China. I feel like a country bumpkin trying to use my $$! 😭

Why is it hard for foreigners? It takes 20 min to get a bank account, and about 5 min to type in your name + passport + account number. Good experience using CMB for this.

You also need a local phone number and monthly plan. Took us a couple of hours going from bank to China mobile to bank again.

Ah, ok, makes sense. I guess when I set up my bank account I already had a local number.

I also don’t think many tourists will consider opening an actual Chinese bank account to use these wallets. I work on payments and would still hesitate

Ya makes sense. Should be zero problem for foreigners living in China, but a bit much to ask for tourists. Good way to short circuit it is ask someone to send you a p2p payment.

The p2p transfer should indeed work best, though I have also read it won’t allow you to do all types of transactions? Never tried myself
