I don't know what is true for the general public (and you don't either) but a willingness to sacrifice more lives for cheaper, faster, or more reliable transportation is messed up.
Every human action has a risk/benefit tradeoff and society generally doesn’t think that zero risk is the right way to go about it

Sure, but for elevators, escalators and airplanes, we set the bar very very high. Not clear why we have aimed so low when rubber tires are involved.
