Rail transport also has the problem that upgrades require large immediate investments (change the whole line or not), whereas with cars you can just swap in a couple gradually.
Why is laying rail more expensive than building freeways? If vehicle usage in cities increases, you’ll be tunneling or demolishing some very expensive & productive real estate - should you not allocate lost rent & prop tax as a cost of your vision?
Overall, you seem to be assuming land, infra construction and maintenance for roads is free or will be paid by someone else. The entire problem of transport in cities is about space consumed per person transported, externalities, and property values. No mention of that at all?
autonomous buses, that can platoon (effectively becoming trains), that can run on optically guided tracks (paint on pavement)...demand responsive scheduling
That’s pretty much my scenario with high capacity vehicles. I like it.https://twitter.com/thijsniks/status/947893619771498498 …
the savings from eliminating the labor costs of deadheading alone (empty buses moving to staging points) - by having autonomous buses --is tremendous
