One thing to consider is how much crap people keep in their cars. Especially if you have kids. Not to mention child car seats! That’s why we finally bought one: needed two car seats in.https://mobile.twitter.com/ThijsNiks/status/947109370386698240 …
I’m pretty certain that’ll be a secondary concern to pricing. People adjust behavior once it’s cheap enough.

Child seats will also no longer be needed in fully self-driving cars, as the safety incident rate will be tiny

Perhaps. Transition period is going to be difficult. It only works if 100% are self-driving. And don’t forget pedestrians & cyclists etc. Plus, unless you literally ban human driving, there will always be those who want to go manual (and petrol).

Might just be a UK thing as our houses are so small, but people really do drive around with tons of stuff. People keep Xmas presents in the trunk/boot!
-
I do think lots of people use cars for some sort of storage, but human behavior is surprisingly adaptable as long as the new situation has enough advantages.

32% of Brits keep more than 5 items in the car boot inc tools (43%); wellington boots & outdoor clothing (27%); gym bag, sports equipment and golf clubs (11%); pushchair/baby equipment (9%) & multiple pairs of shoes (9%). 22% say the boot is perm storage.http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/news/9596918/Clutter-in-the-boot-wastes-fuel.html …
