A weird thing my parents believe: if you’re going to go out into cold weather later, you should *dress lightly now*, so your body isn’t “surprised” by the “temperature contrast” later(!) Is this a common (wrong!!) idea?

Never heard of that. Growing up in the Northeast, we always erred on the side of dressing too heavily and roasting when in a room with a hyperactive radiator later.

Looks like it’s a European thing maybe? Probably rooted in etiquette around what’s acceptable indoor wear. Grrrr!!
