I'm excited about iOS 11 support for QR codes https://9to5mac.com/2017/06/12/top-10-qr-codes-supported-by-ios-11/ …

Joining a wifi network by scanning a QR code will be so much better than going to Settings, finding the network, and typing in a passwordpic.twitter.com/0EscQw5cMI

Sharing your contact details in person with a QR code will be a huge step up. Question is: Where do you find and edit your code to display?pic.twitter.com/AFvPHj2vFb

Next step is Apple Pay requests through QR codes, like WeChat does. Though I mostly hope it motivates other payment services to use it.

The use of the notification interface is clever. It's unclear to me if iOS will also keep a history of scanned QR codes & how you access it.

The piece I'm waiting on is Facebook finally taking Messenger/WhatsApp identity and payments serious. They are sitting on untapped potential

Or getting your restaurant bill with a printed QR code and paying right there by scanning the deep link into Messenger

Paying through QR codes can work, because (1) how easy it is to start the iPhone camera and (2) everyone is on Facebook Messenger/WhatsApp

Think about QR codes as hyperlinks for the physical world

Just like iOS knowing what to do if you tap a link, iOS 11 will know what to do if you scan a code. It moves QR from app to platform level.

Till now, the information "hyperlinks for the physical world" could transmit was limited to what people could read and remember.

QR codes are increasing the bandwidth between the real and digital worlds. From people remembering ~20 to sending 4,296 characters.

Key to QR code adoption is wide availability and removal of friction. Built into the iOS camera addresses both.

It has to go beyond that though. For example: Will iOS 11 let you generate a QR code for every address book entry?
